What barge capping does

Barge capping runs along the gable end of the roof, capping the cut edge of the roof sheets and returning down over the barge board. It is also called barge flashing or roof edge flashing. Without it you have an exposed sheet edge, a visible timber end, and a direct path for wind-driven rain to track back under the roof.

All of ours is rolled locally from .55 BMT genuine BlueScope steel in COLORBOND® or ZINCALUME®, made to order and cut to the lengths you enter.

Barge board or barge capping?

They are two different things, and people often search for one meaning the other.

• The barge board is the timber board running up the gable end, fixed to the ends of the rafters. It is structural and decorative, and it is what rots if water gets to it.
• The barge capping is the steel that caps over that board and the roof sheet edge. It is what keeps the board dry.

If you are replacing a rotted or weathered barge board, fit new capping at the same time. Capping an old board without checking what is underneath is how the same problem comes back in three years.

Which profile do you need?

Start with the standard COLORBOND® barge capping. It is the shape most builders and DIY customers order, and it suits corrugated custom orb and typical gable detailing. It covers the sheet edge, returns down over the barge board, and sheds water away from the exposed edge.

For anything the standard shape does not fit, a bend or return you need in a specific dimension, download the custom flashing order sheet, mark your dimensions on it and send it through. Custom flashings are what we make in-house.

Ordering and delivery

Choose your profile, finish and colour, enter each length in metres and the quantity, then add to cart. Colour availability varies by product and state, so check the option you have selected before you check out.

Every piece is made to order. Dispatch is within 2-6 business days, delivered to site across Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT, Queensland and Tasmania. Enter your postcode for the freight cost.

Installing barge capping

• Lap 100mm to 150mm between lengths, and always lap in the direction of water flow.
• Use an anti-capillary offset fold, or hold a 5mm clearance gap at joints, so water is not drawn back into the roof.
• Fix with roofing screws rather than rivets. Screws give higher shear capacity at the edge.
• Use neutral-cure silicone on laps and under the flashing. Acid-cure silicone corrodes the coating.
• Sweep swarf off the day it is cut, and match screw colour to the capping.

How much does barge capping cost?

From $6.20 per lineal metre in ZINCALUME®, GST included, Victorian pricing. Price rises with girth, the number of bends and the finish, so a wide custom return costs more than a standard barge cap. Select your options above for your state price.

Is capping the same as flashing?

Barge capping is a type of flashing, the one used at the gable or verge edge. Apron flashing, ridge capping and valley are the other common types, each for a different junction.

What is barge capping made from?

.55 BMT genuine BlueScope steel, in COLORBOND® or ZINCALUME®. That is heavier than roof sheet, because a flashing has to hold its shape along an exposed edge.

How long does barge capping last?

Correctly installed with compatible fasteners, .55 BMT COLORBOND® or ZINCALUME® is built for long-term performance at the roof edge. Life depends on exposure, the detailing at the edge and correct sealing. Check it when you clean the gutters: rust spots, loose fasteners and cracked sealant are the three things to look for.

Can I get barge capping to match my roof colour?

Yes. COLORBOND® barge capping comes in the full colour range, the same colours as the roof sheets, gutter, fascia and downpipes.
