Introduction to Roofing Screws & Fasteners

Roofing screws hold your entire roof to the building. The wrong screw means leaks, warranty problems, and premature rust bleeding down your COLORBOND® sheets. The right screw and you never think about it again for 25 years.

Every hex head roofing screw we stock is Bremick B8 coated. B8 is Bremick's proprietary coating system, engineered to exceed AS 3566 Class 4 (the Australian Standard for roofing fasteners) by more than double. B8 is rated for ISO 9223 Category 5 (Very Severe Marine) environments, which means it's fit for coastal Australian conditions, including sites within approximately 150m of breaking surf.

All screws are colour matched to the COLORBOND® range and come with an EPDM sealing washer to keep water out of the fixing hole.

Screw types explained: Vortex Plus vs Type 17

Multifix (Metal OR Timber) is our most popular roofing screw. It's a self-drilling screw with a thread-to-point design that fixes to both metal battens (up to 1.5mm) and timber battens. One screw covers the whole job. Stocked in 12 x 50mm.

Type 17 (Timber Only) is a self-drilling screw with a sharper point designed to bite deep into timber. It's the right choice when you know your battens are timber and you want maximum holding power. Stocked in 12g x 25mm (for cladding) and 12g x 50mm (for roofing).

Metal Self Driller is a shorter screw for fixing lighter metal-to-metal work like flashings and trims. Stocked in 10g x 16mm.

Why choose Metal Roofing Online for your fasteners

We're an Australian family business supplying BlueScope steel roofing and colour-matched fixings across the country. Every roofing screw we stock is B8 coated, not the standard Class 4 you'll find at most hardware chains. Same fitting, roughly the same price, twice the corrosion protection.

No minimum order. No trade account required. Fast dispatch Australia-wide.

B8 coating vs standard AS 3566 Class 4

AS 3566 is the Australian Standard that governs roofing screws. Class 4 is the highest corrosion class within the standard and is what most hardware chains stock as their premium option. It's rated for standard Australian conditions.

Bremick's B8 coating is certified above Class 4. Per Bremick's published data, B8 provides twice the corrosion protection of Class 4 and eight times the coating hardness. It's warranted for ISO 9223 Category 5 environments, the highest category, which covers coastal Australian sites exposed to sea salt spray from breaking surf.

What this means for your build: if you're roofing anywhere within 5km of the coast in Australia (Mornington Peninsula, Bass Coast, Great Ocean Road, Sydney beaches, Gold Coast, WA coast, all of Tasmania), B8 is the coating you want. Standard Class 4 fixings can rust prematurely in marine environments and take your roof warranty with them. B8 is designed for exactly those conditions.

Inland Australian buyers benefit too. B8 lasts longer regardless of where the roof is. We stock B8 across every roofing screw size we sell.

Installation & Ordering Guide

How many screws do I need? Screw quantity depends on profile (Corrugated, Trimdek, Klip-Lok), batten spacing, and wind zone. As a general guide for standard residential corrugated re-roofing, allow approximately 10 to 12 screws per square metre of roof area. Your builder or roofer will confirm the exact count for your job.

What length do I need? Roofing screw length = batten thickness + roof sheet profile height + at least 15mm penetration into the batten. For typical 45mm timber battens and standard corrugated iron, 12g x 50mm is the go-to. For metal purlins up to 1.5mm, multifix 12 x 50mm handles both timber and metal battens.

Common mistakes. Using indoor screws on a roof (they'll rust within 12 months). Under-driving so the sealing washer doesn't compress (leaks). Over-driving so the washer squeezes out (also leaks). Mixing brands so half your screws are B8 and half are Class 3 (the Class 3 ones fail first and stain your sheets). Stick to one brand, one coating, correct drive depth.

Delivery. 3 to 7 working days approximately, Australia-wide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is B8 coating and why does it matter?

B8 is Bremick's proprietary coating system for roofing screws, certified to exceed the AS 3566 Class 4 Australian Standard. It provides twice the corrosion protection of Class 4 and is warranted for ISO 9223 Category 5 (Very Severe Marine) environments. If your build is anywhere in coastal Australia, or you simply want maximum lifespan on your fixings, B8 is the coating you want. Every hex head roofing screw at Metal Roofing Online is B8 coated as standard.

Should I use Vortex Plus or Type 17 screws?

Use Multifix (Metal or Timber) if you're not sure what your battens are, or if your roof has a mix of metal and timber battens. Use Type 17 (Timber Only) if you know your battens are timber and you want maximum holding power. Mulifix is the most popular choice because it covers both scenarios with one box on site.

How many roofing screws do I need per square metre?

For standard residential corrugated roofing, allow approximately 10 to 12 screws per square metre of roof area as a guide. Actual quantity depends on your profile, batten spacing, and local wind zone. Your builder or roofer will confirm the exact figure for your job.

Are these screws colour matched to COLORBOND® roofing?

Yes. Our roofing screws come in the full COLORBOND® colour range, including Basalt, Windspray, Evening Haze, Bluegum and more. The screw head is powder-coated to match your roof so the fixings blend into the finished surface rather than standing out.

Can B8 screws be used near the coast in Australia?

Yes. B8 coating is specifically warranted for coastal Australian conditions, including sites within approximately 150m of breaking surf. It's rated for ISO 9223 Category 5, the highest corrosion category, which covers sea salt spray zones. Standard Class 4 fixings can rust prematurely in coastal Australian environments; B8 is designed for exactly those conditions.
