Sisalation® Multipurpose EHD (456) Roof Sarking, 60m Roll

Foil sarking that goes under the roof sheets. The silver face bounces radiant heat back out before it gets into the roof space, and the whole sheet is a water barrier, so wind-blown rain, dust and the odd screw leak land on the sarking and should run to the gutter instead of onto your ceiling.

Extra heavy duty, 60m x 1350mm, 81m² a roll, 9.3kg.

Roof or wall?

Roof, in every state, under metal or tile (not slate). Walls only in the tropics and sub-tropics, NCC climate zones 1 to 3: Queensland, the NT and the NSW north coast. South of that, a vapour permeable wall wrap so the frame can dry out, and 456 is a vapour barrier.

Sarking or blanket?

Sarking is a membrane: it reflects heat and keeps water off the ceiling, and that's all. It has no R-value of its own and does nothing for rain noise. For a room people live in under a metal roof, the 75mm foil-faced blanket does the sarking job and adds R1.8 and quiet. Sarking alone is for a tile roof, a shed, or a metal roof over a ceiling that already has its own batts and a ventilated cavity.

How is it laid?

Anti-glare face up to the sky, silver face down into the roof space; the silver side only works facing an air gap. Roll it across the rafters or battens from the gutter up, each run lapping 150mm over the one below so water runs out, not in. Fix with foil fasteners or double-sided sarking tape, tape the joins and any penetrations, and sheet the roof the same day. Install to AS/NZS 4200.2.
